Job Overview

Working under minimal supervision, the Technical Specialist – Group assists with both strategic and business as usual initiatives to achieve efficient and streamlined processes as well as take on a pivotal role in the creation, maintenance, and utilization of a training program.


Job Responsibilties

  • Act as a subject matter expert, to assist with (but not limited to):
    • Strategic Initiatives, including technological advancements 
    • Product Development
    • Process review
    • Reporting
    • Customer Engagement
  • Lead and/or participate in periodic work reviews for quality assurance purposes
  • Champion the development and implementation of business change
  • Work with teams to maintain existing documentation so that it reflects up to date and proper information
  • Recommend changes to documentation, including procedures and user manuals
  • Provide technical assistance and training to ensure consistency in the implementation of change
  • Mentor and develop team members to facilitate sessions for the sharing of knowledge and best practices
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends to ensure Wawanesa is prepared to respond in a manner consistent with our vision and values
  • Foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including other regional offices and networking at industry events
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert on projects and enhancements that involve the Group Specialist, Group Contract and Group Underwriting departments
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of data
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Post-secondary education and 5 years of equivalent group insurance work experience
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a senior role mentoring or training team members is considered an asset
  • Strong leadership skills to positively influence team members and provide direction
  • Advanced understanding of group insurance principles
  • Expert communication skills with the ability to present information in a convincing manner
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to handle changing priorities and fluctuating work volumes to meet deadlines
  • Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to provide justification
  • Strong problem-solving skills with ability to review and analyze information and develop appropriate solution
  • Ability to read/write/speak (bilingual) in French is an asset
  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in a business-related field, or equivalent education and experience is a requirement
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite is required, including the ability to use Excel for reporting and analysis of information
