Job Overview

 

As a Senior Sustainability & Climate Change Specialist, you will be the primary subject matter expert (SME) and thought leader on climate change issues and will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and driving Wawanesa’s climate change strategy. You will be lead activities related to quantifying Wawanesa’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, developing our GHG reduction strategy, coordinating the creation of climate change disclosures, and collaborating with various stakeholders on numerous climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Be the internal SME on a variety of sustainability topics, with a particular focus on climate change issues, risks, opportunities, disclosure, reporting, and GHG emissions
  • Development and implementation of programs and initiatives that support climate change mitigation and adaptation, including GHG quantification, GHG reduction initiatives, and GHG reporting that are aligned to leading climate change standards, frameworks, disclosures, and commitments, such as GHG-P, SBTi, TCFD, SASB, GRI, SDGs, CDP, Paris Agreement etc.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure accurate collection, aggregation, and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative climate change data (i.e., energy, fuel, procurement, travel, fleet, waste, investments, etc.), and ensuring data aligns with climate change reporting standards and frameworks
  • Create and manage effective workflow processes related to creating sustainability and climate change related reports and communicating this sustainability related data internally and externally
  • Continuous monitoring of sustainability and climate change trends, standards, frameworks, regulations, and industry best practices to guide and influence Wawanesa’s sustainability and climate change strategy
  • Act as an internal advocate to provide encouragement, support, and advice to various internal teams on sustainability and climate change related initiatives
     

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in sustainability with a focus on climate change issues, preferably in insurance or financial services sector, and/or in a large organization
  • Undergraduate or master’s degree in business, sustainability, environmental studies or science, engineering, or related field
  • Strong research and analysis skills; ability to frame key analyses required to address critical business issues
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey ideas in a persuasive and eloquent manner
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and conceptual ideas; creative and lateral thinker
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Team-oriented, collaborative and flexible
  • Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Completion of CIP designation considered an asset
  • Ability and willingness to travel in Canada and the United States.
