Job Overview

 

The Director, Personal Insurance is accountable for the financial results of the personal insurance portfolio in Canada.  Responsibilities include product management, product development, input to pricing decisions, liaising with analytics, reporting, creation and maintenance of underwriting guidelines and policy language, as well as overall portfolio analysis and premium leakage reviews.  The role provides guidance to the VP, Personal Insurance on product strategy, risk appetite and risk management based on product, market and analytics.  This position is responsible for advancing the Company's performance by driving improvements in revenue, profit and loss ratio. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the financial results of the personal automobile and property product portfolio 
  • Acts as the key point of contact for Management on the product portfolio for which they are responsible 
  • Responsible for all investments in strategic projects designed to support execution of product strategies (e.g., the creation of new insurance products, and insurance product changes)
  • Establishes the strategic direction for the Company's product lines, including portfolio of products and monitoring of operational execution through premium leakage review, portfolio analysis and in collaboration with Actuarial Pricing, on the pricing
  • Development of product strategy, based on data from performance metrics
  • Advancing the Company’s performance by driving improvements in revenue, profit and loss ratio
  • Supports the ongoing business transformation (and other strategic projects which span across Products & Marketing business units), and provides guidance on product, pricing, quality, and portfolio management decisions
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of market and product trends, the competitive environment, regulatory actions and decisions and rallies the appropriate team to formulate and implement a response where required
  • Provides guidance on resolution of claims issues in exceptional cases, in consultation with claims and executive leaders
  • Engages senior leaders and facilitates collaboration to drive development and execution of actions as an outcome of portfolio management
  • Creates the rate and product change schedule, in collaboration with the Actuarial Pricing leaders, and manages the analysis and implementation of product and rate reviews to drive financial results 
  • Develops and enhances productive business relationships by liaising with internal and external stakeholders
  • Oversees the development, communication and maintenance of underwriting guidelines and procedures, rating rules, and product wordings
  • Ensures compliance for product related filings with provincial regulators
  • Oversees the development and compliance of broker audits
  • Develops and maintains contractual agreements with outside service providers
  • Develops, coaches/mentors and manages the performance of direct reports, including identification of areas for improvement, and the development of performance improvement plans to ensure achievement of business, functional and individual goals
  • Provides leadership to attract/retain high quality talent, including appropriate employee communication, sound structure/processes, etc.

Qualifications

  • Ten years of business experience
  • Three years in a management role
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, actuarial science, or related discipline
  • Relevant industry-related certifications are considered a strong asset (CIP, FCIP, ACAS, FCAS)
  • Expert leadership skills with the ability to influence and gain respect, credibility and confidence from others
  • Ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and high-pressure situations
  • Deep expertise and knowledge of Property and Casualty insurance, strategies, underwriting practices, guidelines, and the external operating environment.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment in which he/she is leading organizational change
  • Possesses personal characteristics of a strong leader – including personal resilience, adaptability, self-awareness and the charisma to develop and communicate a vision with passion
  • Develops, coaches/mentors and manages the performance of other executives to ensure achievement of business, functional and individual goals
  • Shapes a culture which values learning and development at all levels, and appropriately allocates financial resources and human resources to develop the next generation of Personal Insurance technical leaders and actuaries
  • Address any competency gaps in the Product, Pricing and Underwriting area with effective recruitment, training/development plans, staff augmentation and address any areas of over resourcing efficiently through reallocation, retraining or redeployemnt
  • Provides leadership that will attract/retain high quality talent, including high employee engagement and effective communication, structure and processes.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to influence and effectively negotiate with stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability and willingness to travel
