Job Overview

Working under minimal supervision, this Data Scientist job contributes to Wawanesa’s success by extracting knowledge and insights from data, through machine learning, data mining and predictive modeling, to support decision making across the organization.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to translate business questions into formalized and repeatable analytical processes
  • Work with various stakeholders throughout the organization to design, develop, and assess experiments aimed at uncovering meaningful and actionable insights
  • Keep up to date on current statistical and mathematical models and methodologies, including those relating to machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence with an eye for applying this knowledge to business processes
  • Contribute to the successful deployment of predictive analytics into core systems
  • Contribute to educational initiatives aimed at the development of overall inter- and intra-departmental knowledge
  • Mentor other Data Scientists and contribute to a culture of continual learning and improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary degree/certificate preferably in the area of computer science, mathematics, statistics, actuarial science/mathematics, engineering, physics, or other related field
  • Two to four years’ practical experience performing analysis or developing analytical processes using current programming languages and/or statistical software through work or academia 
  • Two years’ experience performing data exploration, data management, and other data related activities
  • Proficiency with analytical tools and processes used within the department
    • SQL, Python, Cloud platforms (AWS), version control, coding standards, etc.
  • Expert level understanding of Machine Learning including supervised, unsupervised, NLP, and deep learning algorithms
  • Experience in deploying machine learning models for use in core business processes
  • Strong creativity skills, with the ability to develop solutions to a variety of problems
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with style fitting for the audience and message
  • Strong planning and organizing skills, with the ability to develop and implement plans by prioritizing
  • Effective leadership skills, with the ability to facilitate high team morale by encouraging and coaching team members
  • Effective decision-making skills, with the ability to direct team members to achieve goals through clear instruction
  • Proven ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge and experience in the insurance industry is considered an asset
