The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $60,000 - $70,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

Working under general supervision, this role supports Wawanesa’s success by coordinating and conducting medical interviews with clients applying for life insurance, reviewing and assessing the risk of life and living benefits insurance applications.  This role is responsible for collection of confidential information about client’s medical and non-medical history, review medical, financial, and personal information to determine an applicant's insurability using online and internal tools.
 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Complete recorded tele interviews and document the answers while demonstrating active listening skills and applying the underwriting knowledge and creativity to deliver exceptional customer experience.
  • Review individual life insurance applications and underwriting requirements to evaluate the degree of risk involved through assessment of an individual's medical history, habits, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision.
  • Select and classify risks according to company and reinsurance underwriting guidelines, and compliance with all legislation and consumer regulation as they apply to risk classification, privacy and disclosure.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of company underwriting guidelines, workflow, and business rules to properly refer cases to reinsurers, order additional underwriting requirements, and refer cases to senior underwriters for review.
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data.
  • Work effectively towards team goals.
  • Provide excellent customer service and build positive relationships with internal and external clients including customers, brokers, reinsurers, and internal business units.
  • Meet or exceed company service standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • One (1) years' experience in Life and/or Living Benefits is required.
  • Experience in medical interview or a call centre or a customer service environment.
  • Post-secondary education or related business/field experience.
  • Actively working towards or completion of FALU is required.
  • Actively working towards or completion of FLMI is required.
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology, diseases, tests, and treatments. 
  • Strong knowledge of non-medical risk factors (e.g. occupation, avocation, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite is required.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and personal development is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to select and implement best solutions.
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a high volume, fast paced environment and handling stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Strong time management and organization skills with the ability to establish priorities and meet Company service standards, while being flexible in times of pressure and change.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive and collaborative work atmosphere.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review information carefully and comprehensively.
  • Must be available to work shifts between the hours of 9AM-8PM PST.
  • Punjabi language is considered an asset.
