Job Overview

The National Underwriting Manager – Commercial Programs is a key member to the Commercial Insurance Executive Office Team.
Working with a high degree of autonomy, the National Underwriting Manager – Commercial Programs contributes to Wawanesa’s success by working with the director to set the strategy, direction and appetite for the National Programs portfolio. In this role, you are responsible for the execution and management of the national program strategy and will lead a high-performance team that works cross-functionally to deliver profitable underwriting growth and results; including evaluation of New Business opportunities, development and maintenance of program/broker underwriting authority/ managing general underwriting agreements including underwriting authority, rate/wording recommendations for renewal business and provide technical support for underwriting across the Commercial Programs portfolio. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Influence the underwriting culture within the Commercial Programs team
  • Execution of underwriting strategies across the Commercial Programs portfolio as well as within each program portfolio include review of policy wordings, delegation of underwriting authority (broker and internal), program and guidelines, catastrophe management and reinsurance utilization 
  • Monitors Commercial Programs portfolio and individual program experience and performance; including loss experience, portfolio mix, changes and trends to drive appropriate underwriting and pricing actions within the programs
  • Provides strong technical underwriting direction to the Commercial Programs team to support profit and growth goals through effective communication of strategy and appetite and underwriting and pricing best practice 
  • Promotes consistency, accountability, and collaboration across Wawanesa , including claims, business development, loss control and Regional leaders and Executive office through the presentation of new business and renewal strategies as well as overall Commercial Programs performance
  • Promote consistency, accountability and collaboration with our external broker partners
  • Provides strategic input and leadership on operational decisions, driving the organization to achieve our strategic goals
  • Supports the Commercial Programs team with guidance and referrals
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of underwriting guidelines and procedures within the Commercial Programs team
  • Supports workflow optimization including system, process and people enhancements
  • Analyzes risks and creates recommendations for risk mitigation
  • Has accountability for the financial performance of the Commercial Programs team
  • Supports QA File Reviews to ensure adherence to policies, procedures and program guidelines
  • Foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including other regional offices and networking at industry events
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • 10+ years of Property and Casualty commercial underwriting experience in the insurance industry, along with 3 years in a leadership or national programs role preferred
  • Post-secondary education and/or completion of a Property and Casualty Industry Designation
  • Extensive knowledge of the Property Casualty insurance industry and insurance operations in general.
  • Strong business acumen with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize and identify critical issues.
  • Excellent strategic influencing skills with ability to effectively collaborate across the business and to gain respect, credibility and confidence from others.
