Job Overview

Wawanesa is looking for an exceptional candidate to take on the role of Actuarial Consultant in our expanding Reserving Excellence Team. We are open to hiring at other levels including Senior Actuarial Analyst, or Actuary.

 

As a member of Reserving Excellence, your focus will be on improving the sophistication of our actuarial financial reporting through process enhancements, automation, data manipulation, reporting capabilities, and advancement of our reserving techniques. Ongoing assessment of our best practices and methods is an important part of the role in order to support our Reserving, Forecasting and IFRS 17 teams. You will provide contributions to the actuarial group based on your knowledge from the actuarial exam system, as well as your prior relevant academic and work experience. You will be a mentor for actuarial analysts while working through complex analysis in the pursuit of solving business issues and answering business questions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Actuarial  and Statistical Standards
    • Incorporate, understand and transfer knowledge of current methods, while ensuring completeness and accuracy
    • Prepare data summaries, and various analyses
    • Evaluate procedures and processes regularly and recommend improvements
    • Develops and maintains ‘best practice’ processes and methodologies 
  • Peer Review and Mentoring
    • Review analysis of others for reasonableness, completeness and accuracy
    • Train/coach other actuarial staff on actuarial methods and actively share expertise with peers
  • Data
    • Research, extract, and manipulate complex data from all relevant sources
    • Identify relationships, problems/issues, and assess data quality
  • Efficiency
    • Identify opportunities for automation of routine tasks
    • Develop creative new approaches to problem solving and assess impacts of solution options
  • Workflow Management
    • Track the status of project timelines, tasks, and various activities
    • Develop effective plans that define activities, resources, and timelines
  • Communication
    • Collaborating closely with various other teams to solve complex problems 
    • Develop and deliver presentations to the actuarial group and other departments
  • Build Business Acumen
    • Identify the business requirements for a given task and initiate action as required
    • Understanding the insurance mechanism in general, as well as how it works at Wawanesa

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years' prior work experience in insurance or related field
  • Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study
  • Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society, Associate of the Society of Actuaries, or equivalent
  • Ability to apply knowledge of actuarial science, principles of finance and business to problems in insurance
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments in a timely manner, and perform under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with style fitting for the audience and message 
  • Ability to understand the context of an issue and its impact on all areas of the organization
  • Possess strong leadership skills, with an ability to lead projects
  • Computer proficiency
    o    Experience working in reserving software, such as Arius
    o    Robust knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, with exposure to Power BI being an asset
    o    Ability to translate problem solving methods and ideas to various computer languages efficiently and effectively
    o    Understanding of database systems and how to interpret/extract data from those systems
    o    Able to adapt to new enterprise system environments, with exposure to the Atlassian suite being an asset
