Job Overview

The Director, Taxation leads, guides and directs in the delivery and administration of corporate income tax accounting and compliance matters as well as adaptation of various new tax regulatory requirements. Establishes departmental policies and procedures to adhere to regulatory requirements. Delivers tax technical, functional and human resources leadership of the department through supporting and guiding daily corporate tax activities, establishing and maintaining corporate tax strategic initiatives and collaboration with senior management as a corporate income tax and indirect tax resource and consultant. Responsible for the overall tax compliance, tax advice and tax strategy of Wawanesa and all of its subsidiaries.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage the timely and accurate filing of income, commodity and premium tax returns and remittances.
  • Review tax provisions and notes on a quarterly and annual basis as required including computation and reporting of deferred taxes and commodity tax for financial institutions. Analyze and report on tax variances. Liaising with external auditors.
  • Collaborate regularly with various departments and subsidiary finance staff to support the resolution of internal enquires, issues and concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with tax policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Advise and review taxes for the annual budgeting process.
  • Provide tax consultation on transactions and corporate reorganizations which includes escalating significant issues for discussion with senior management, working with external advisors to minimize tax risks and resolving complex tax issues.
  • Perform tax due diligence on mergers and acquisitions, and divestitures as needed. Sometimes this involves working in conjunction with external tax and legal advisors.
  • Respond to queries from government tax auditors, provide information and evidence regarding the company’s filing positions, defending those positions against proposed reassessment and, if necessary in the negotiation of settlements.
  • Research and advise on the impact of changes to current tax legislation and provide relevant information on industry trends.
  • Identify, establish, develop, implement and monitor service/performance standards, internal controls and the identification of departmental productivity and procedural improvements.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with various taxation departments & agencies (CRA, MRQ, etc.).
  • Analyze the calculation of inter-company charges from a transfer pricing perspective, including the development and annual maintenance of contemporaneous documentation.
  • Lead the scientific research and development tax credit and commodity tax recoveries.
  • Liaise with the internal departments to work on all operational tax issues and tax solutions.
  • Champions leadership and people development by promoting a positive working environment and leading a high performing team of tax professionals. Promote a team approach, providing frequent feedbacks and motivate them to increase their performance. Encourage their professional development by targeting their development areas and then then monitor their progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree with a major in Accounting or other related post-secondary degree.
  • CPA accounting designation and completion of the CPA In-depth Tax Course. Completion of addition CPA In-depth Tax courses considered an asset.
  • 12 or more years progressive tax experience (within or serving the Financial Services/Insurance Industry strongly preferred).
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills. Treats others with respect and courtesy and shares thoughts and ideas with the rest of the team. Works to ensure group objectives are met by making quality contributions and supporting direct reports and fellow team members.
  • Positive and confident individual who communicates in a persuasive and eloquent manner (both written and oral). Strong negotiation skills by presenting information or arguments in a convincing manner and by focusing on what is important.
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills by keeping track of the status of various tasks and project activities.
