Job Overview
The Senior Actuarial Consultant, Forecasting operates with a high degree of autonomy to support the company's financial planning and capital management objectives. The role centers on the development of the annual financial plan, Financial Condition Testing (FCT), and capital management in close partnership with line of business owners to monitor and support the smooth execution of the operational plan.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical skills and business acumen to meaningful, high-visibility work. This role offers a distinctive opportunity to collaborate across a broad set of internal stakeholders — including Pricing, Finance, Reserving, Business Development, Claims, and Operations — in support of the company's financial health and long-term strategic growth.
This role is open to candidates at the Actuarial Consultant, Senior Actuarial Consultant and Actuarial Expert levels.
Job Responsibilities
- Research, extract, and manipulate complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality for Budget and Financial Condition Testing projects.
- Support the business and overall company by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders.
- Apply analytical and technical skills to evaluate large or complex datasets, drawing meaningful insights to inform financial planning decisions. Strong attention to detail when performing analysis with minimal technical errors.
- Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency. Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions.
- Leverage AI tools to enhance personal and team productivity, streamlining workflows and reducing manual effort where appropriate. Develops new approaches to problem solving and assess impacts of solution options with minimal support from leaders.
- Monitor emerging industry trends and assess their potential impact on Wawanesa Represent Wawanesa at external engagements, including universities, actuarial organizations, industry events, and charitable causes. Construct and provide progress updates and reports regarding Forecasting team’s objectives and tasks.
- Communicate Budget and FCT analysis and recommendations to diverse audience.
- Anticipate obstacles and raise them proactively, keeping stakeholders informed throughout project lifecycles.
- Understand and interpret government regulations and internal policies. Identify the business requirements for a given task and initiate action as required.
- Understanding the insurance mechanism in general, as well as how it works at Wawanesa.
- Commit to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies.
- Focuses learning activities on bringing new knowledge and skills to team in order to address any existing gaps.
- Leads projects from beginning to end. Includes implementation of final product. May include training and documentation of the project.
- Ability to prioritize and complete multiple concurrent assignments, both individually and as a leader of a group, in a timely manner while proactively keeping leader informed of progress.
- Builds trust and credibility with peers.
- Develops strong working relationships across teams.
- Actively contributes to the mentorship, training and development of actuarial analysts.
- Provide feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their current or future job responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related field.
- Four or more years of P&C actuarial experience preferred.
- Pursuing FCAS, 7 CAS exams or ACAS designation an asset. Proficiency with Excel, SQL, Python, R, and/or other related software/programming.
- Experience in budget, Financial Condition Test, capital modelling an asset.
- A team player who can challenge the status quo respectfully and seek feedback for improvement.
