Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $130,000 - $160,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

Working under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for leading a team in the administration and monitoring of the Corporate Reinsurance Program. The Manager, Reinsurance ensures that all reporting requirements are meet. In addition, the manager oversees the internal catastrophe modelling and liaisons with other departments as required on the model.

Job Responsibilities

  • Administers and monitors the company reinsurance contracts (cost of approximately $100 million).
  • Manages the monthly calculation of ceded recoveries – casualty, catastrophes and facultative.
  • Manages the monthly monitoring of facultative placements by regional branches.
  • Manages the monthly reporting to reinsurers.
  • Monitors of earthquake exposure and alert management of EQ accumulations outside of acceptable range on a quarterly basis.
  • Reports annual reinsurance and earthquake reporting to management.
  • Ensures that the Regulatory earthquake filings are filed with government agencies.
  • Works extensively with external parties such as reinsurers and the reinsurance broker.
  • Works with reinsurance broker on annual catastrophe modelling.
  • Oversees the internal catastrophe modelling.
    Manages the allocation of reinsurance premium
    Performs ad hoc requests from reinsurers
    Identifies and recommends changes to our reinsurance program.
    Remains up to date on all regulatory and legal actions/decisions affecting insurance company operations in general.
    Manages performance of direct reports inclusive of providing professional and technical guidance, and provide regular performance reviews.
    Creates and presents the ceded budget including catastrophe projections annually to senior management
    Performs other duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an actuarial, reinsurance, underwriting or claims related role. Previous leadership experience would be preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Property Casualty insurance industry, insurance operations in general and reinsurance required.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand context and its impact on all issues.
  • Identifies when something needs to be done and initiates action as required.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive plans that bridge complex issues and span across time.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate a vision.
  • Adapts to change effectively.
  • Actuarial exams would be preferred but not required.
  • CIP or ARe designation would be desirable.
