Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $120,000 - $170,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview
Working under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for leading a team responsible for catastrophe modeling and accumulation management. This team supports pricing, underwriting, risk management and strategy in managing and pricing our catastrophe risk for our current portfolio and growth plans. It also supports the sustainability and finance teams in their climate disclosures and related reporting. In addition, the manager maintains the internal catastrophe modelling and related tools.
Job Responsibilities
- Develops model governance and related framework for catastrophe modeling.
- Leads the development of the company’s view of risk for multiple catastrophe perils.
- Maintains, and validates the company’s accumulation management tools and catastrophe models.
- Oversees all internal catastrophe models.
- Monitors the company’s exposure accumulation and makes recommendations to other departments.
- Supports pricing, underwriting, risk management and strategy in managing and pricing our catastrophe risk for our current portfolio and growth plans.
- Works extensively with external parties such as model vendors and reinsurance brokers to understand developments in catastrophe risk management techniques and modeling.
- Works with reinsurance team to support the annual catastrophe modelling for reinsurance planning.
- Performs ad hoc requests from other departments (Risk, Pricing, Underwriting, Strategy).
- Remains up to date on all regulatory and legal actions/decisions potentially affecting catastrophe claims.
- Supports the Sustainability and other teams with climate related reporting.
- Manages performance of direct reports inclusive of providing professional and technical guidance,and provide regular performance reviews.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics, Physical Sciences or other related field of study.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an analytical role with at least 3 years of experience in catastrophe modeling.
- Extensive knowledge of the property & casualty reinsurance industry and insurance operations in general.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand context and its impact on all issues.
- Develops and implements comprehensive plans that bridge complex issues and span across time.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate a vision.
- CIP, ARe or a catastrophe modeling designation considered an asset.
