Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $160,000 - $210,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview
As a Director, Corporate Actuarial, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the Reserving function. You will lead the team by establishing best practices for the team’s processes and methodologies, elevating both efficiency and analytical rigor. As Wawanesa looks to scale its voice and grow, this role will be instrumental in scaling the Reserving practice – ensuring it evolves in step with the organization’s growth while consistently aligning with the latest industry, professional, and regulatory standards. Beyond technical expertise, you will act as a catalyst for collaboration and insight, drawing on the collective experience of the team to deliver stronger, more informed outcomes, while seamlessly balancing multiple high-priority initiatives. Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Actuarial – Reserving, this position offers a unique opportunity to influence strategy, strengthen capabilities, and help define the future of reserving at Wawanesa.
Job Responsibilities
- Leads the reserve valuation on a quarterly basis and makes recommendations with respect to changes.
- Owns the preparation of a quarterly reporting package for Senior Management and the Board that provides information on Wawanesa's reserve position, including recommendations regarding changes.
- Leads and oversees the reporting process around actuarial aspects of financial and regulatory reporting.
- Partners with key stakeholders to contribute to a shared understanding of past financial performance and changes in business operations, while developing insights into future performance and the business plan.
- Collaborates with other members of the Corporate Actuarial team to continuously enhance actuarial oversight practices and achieve Corporate Actuarial objectives. Remains up to date on all regulatory and legal actions/decisions affecting insurance company operations in general and the Corporate Actuarial group specifically.
- Engages senior leaders and facilitates collaboration to drive development and execution of initiatives within the Director's sphere of influence that support the strategic goals of the Corporate Actuarial team and the organization.
- Provides leadership to attract and retain high-quality talent, ensuring employees can achieve their full potential while contributing to Wawanesa's goals.
- Oversees, manages and coaches an engaged and effective reserving team through employee development, performance management, and succession planning, in order to ensure that the work environment is respectful, challenging, and rewarding.

Qualifications
- A minimum of 10 years of property and casualty actuarial experience, including at least three years in a leadership role.
- Degree in Actuarial Science, Math, Statistics, Finance or a related field.
- Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society designations are required.
- Experience leading a corporate actuarial function, with advanced knowledge of reserving techniques, financial reporting under IFRS 17, the Canadian P&C insurance industry, and insurance operations in general.
- A strong professional network within and outside Wawanesa, including involvement with CIA or CAS committees.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to build and develop strong teams, gain respect, credibility and confidence from others.
- Strong business acumen with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to recognize and identify critical issues.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey complex ideas in a simple, persuasive and eloquent manner, and diplomatically deliver challenging messages.
- Ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and high-pressure situations.
