Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $180,000 - $230,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview
This role drives Wawanesa’s success by setting a clear pricing strategy and leading the development, implementation, and evolution of rating structures and rates aligned with actuarial best practice. A key focus of the role is to strengthen integration and collaboration across teams, ensuring alignment between actuarial, underwriting, product, and the broader enterprise. This job contributes to Wawanesa’s success by directing, planning, and implementing strategies and initiatives that develop and maintain rating structures and rates following actuarial best practice in industry.
Rooted in a One Commercial Team mindset, this position acts as a strategic advisor and trusted partner—driving meaningful insights, modelling collaborative behaviours, and fostering strong cross-functional relationships across the organization and within Commercial. This leadership ensures clarity, cohesion, and collective success as we work together to deliver competitive pricing, avoid adverse selection, and advance enterprise-wide goals.
Job Responsabilities
- Lead and promote research and development to build innovative, competitive rating structures that mitigate adverse selection and support long-term pricing sophistication.
- Set a clear pricing strategy by establishing the schedule of rate and product changes and guiding successful execution of rate and product reviews. Partner closely with
- Product, Underwriting, and Operational teams to ensure rates are competitive and accurately reflect underlying risk.
- Champion the One Commercial Team approach, modelling cross-functional collaboration and fostering behaviours that reinforce “We Are Commercial” across all workstreams.
- Drive insights and strategic partnership across the organization by liaising with key stakeholders, integrating perspectives, and ensuring shared understanding and alignment.
- Shape and support the evolution of Wawanesa’s policies and practices, contributing strategic thinking and thought leadership to advance actuarial pricing frameworks and methodologies.
- Lead change with empathy and clarity, addressing resistance and building genuine commitment to new initiatives, processes, and strategic direction.
- Maintain deep awareness of industry, regulatory, and organizational changes, translating trends into actionable insights and strategic priorities for the team and broader business.
- Develop, coach, and empower a high-performing team, ensuring a respectful, challenging, and rewarding environment that enables people to reach their full potential and contribute to Wawanesa’s goals.
- Strengthen partnerships within Commercial and across the enterprise by acting as a trusted advisor and ensuring integration, collaboration, and shared ownership of outcomes.
- Oversee and maintain relationships with external service providers, including contractual arrangements supporting pricing and analytical needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Wawanesa’s strategic, operational, and cultural objectives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of ten years Property and Casualty industry experience with three years in a leadership role.
- Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study.
- ACAS designation required but Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society strongly preferred
- Subject matter expert on current insurance pricing techniques with ability to mentor others
- Strong MS Office skills
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence and gain respect, credibility and confidence from others.
- Ability to make excellent and well justified decisions in complex and high pressure situations.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to present information or arguments in a convincing manner.
- Ability to develop and implement comprehensive plans and solutions that bridge complex issues that span across time.
- Strong business acumen with excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to recognize and identify critical issues.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively convey ideas in a persuasive and eloquent manner.
- CIP or equivalent Property and Casualty industry designation considered an asset
- Ability and willingness to travel.
