Job Overview
The Key- Account Manager Commercial Mid-Market is responsible for working closely with the Manager, Underwriting Operations, Commercial Mid-Market and Director to manage and underwrite key accounts greater than $100,000 in the premium. This role is responsible for defining strategies and tactics that drive new business acquisition and premium retention in the larger account space while ensuring portfolio quality, profitability and competitiveness for the defined segment/portfolio.
Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, Underwriting Operations, Commercial Mid-Market this creative, solution oriented, technical underwriter works close partnership with leadership to develop acquisition and retention strategies for key and large accounts, creative underwriting solutions, identification of opportunities, while ensuring portfolio quality, and profitability while maintaining a competitive edge. This role will hold high underwriting authority and be responsible for getting complex deals over the line.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for key/large accounts, and brokers, building strong trust-based relationships to achieve growth, profitability, rate and retention objectives
- Achieve sales, growth and retention targets through proactive and disciplined renewal and new business pipeline management
- Stewardship of large account portfolio, developing retention strategies well ahead of renewal cycles
- Stewardship of new business/pipeline opportunities with key brokers to determine the best strategy for account acquisition
- Underwrite new and renewal accounts within underwriting authority, ensuring alignment with Wawanesa underwriting philosophies, guidelines and risk appetite
- Document pricing, capacity and underwriting rationale, including exposure analysis, and recommendations for improved terms, conditions and risk improvement measures
- Review and make recommendations around positioning on competitor/broker wordings
- Liaise with Risk Prevention Services, claims and other stakeholders key to delivering the member and broker value proposition
- Track and share learning from declined or lost business to strengthen competitive positioning
- Collaborate with product, actuarial, and claims teams to identify risks, opportunities and paths to growth and profitability
- Represent Wawanesa at brokers offices and industry events
- Embed Wawanesa’s purpose and values into all aspects of underwriting—building trust with members, enabling success for brokers, and creating value for communities
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial insurance, with deep expertise in mid-market underwriting in the specific segment
- Experience underwriting large accounts
- Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, risk management, or related field; or CRM designations are considered strong assets.
- CIP or FCIP
- Completed or actively pursuing a professional designation (CIP, FCIP, CRM, or equivalent).
- Product development and portfolio management experience considered an asset
- Strong understanding of the mid-market business environment, commercial lines regulatory frameworks, and broker distribution models.
- Proven ability to balance growth and risk, with a focus on long-term portfolio health and member value
- Excellent relationship management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn internal systems quickly.
- Strong analytical skills and sound judgment to evaluate risk and profitability.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to influence broker partners effectively.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within assigned territory.
