Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $100,000 - $150,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

As a member of Reserving Excellence, your focus will be on improving the sophistication of our actuarial financial reporting through process enhancements, automation, data manipulation, new reporting capabilities, and advancement of our reserving techniques. Your focus will be to autonomously lead data-driven initiatives that enable new processes and efficiencies, while regularly communicating results to key stakeholders. Ongoing assessment of our best practices and methods is an important part of the role to support our core Reserving function and the broader Corporate Actuarial team. Providing contributions to the actuarial group based on your knowledge from the actuarial exam system, as well as your prior relevant academic and work experience is expected. You will be a mentor and coach for actuarial analysts while working through complex analysis in the pursuit of solving business issues and answering business questions.

 

We are open to three levels: Senior Actuarial Analyst, Actuarial Consultant, or Senior Actuarial Consultant level.

Job Responsibilities

  • Researches, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality
  • Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders
  • Automates data pipelines joining data from multiple data systems to streamline reporting and analysis
  • Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions
  • Develops new approaches to problem solving and assess impacts of solution options with minimal support from leaders
  • Evaluates existing procedures and processes, and recommends alternatives or improvements that maximize efficiency
  • Provides regular project updates to stakeholders. Anticipates obstacles and raises them in advance
  • Ability to understand stakeholder needs, and proposes solutions that maximize stakeholder value
  • Leads projects from beginning to end. Includes solutioning, scope, analysis and proper implementation of final product
  • Builds trust and credibility with peers. Develops strong working relationships across teams
  • Identifies emerging industry trends and analyzes the impact they will have on Wawanesa
  • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa at external events that may include universities, actuarial clubs, industry organizations, and charitable causes
  • Actively contributes to the mentorship, training and development of actuarial analysts
  • Provides feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their current or future job responsibilities
  • Commits to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies
  • Focuses learning activities on bringing new knowledge and skills to team in order to address any existing gaps

Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business, and strong ability to apply this knowledge to problems in insurance
  • Ability to develop efficient and viable solutions to problems and assess impacts of these solution options
  • Advanced proficiency with SQL and R, and/or other related programming languages
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and Power BI and/or equivalent
  • Advanced proficiency in Akur8 Arius reserving software and/or equivalent
  • Proficiency in AWS with the ability to easily adapt to new enterprise system environments
  • Effective communicator with proven skills to present, teach, and persuade
  • Works well in a team setting, contributes to team spirit and shared objectives
  • Adapt at supporting and mentoring colleagues
  • Works openly and transparently in collaboration with business partners
  • Shows strong initiative, autonomy, and a desire to win
  • Post-secondary degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related discipline
  • More than four years of actuarial experience 
  • Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society or equivalent
