Job Overview

Under limited supervision, the Senior Field Claims Investigator contributes to Wawanesa’s goal of delivering an exceptional and consistent claims service experience through the thorough investigation of high-complexity suspicious losses and by providing a visible fraud deterrent in the assigned area of operation.


Job Responsibilities

  • Review referred high-complexity claim files to develop individual investigation plans, and provide clear documentation both to communicate with assigned claims personnel and preserve evidence
  • Independently conduct investigations in accordance with applicable regulations through in-person recorded interviews, scene and facility inspections, and telephone contact.
  • Identify and seek to mitigate incidental risks to the company during the investigation
  • Identify subjects for major multi-claim case development, and develop a long term investigation strategy
  • Collaborate with in-house and outside counsel and leader on developing affirmative litigation strategy or deterrent strategy
  • Liaise with law enforcement agency personnel (local, state, and federal), and have an understanding of legal limitations
  • Develop, identify and proactively pursue new leads necessary to complete a thorough investigation
  • Provide ongoing updates on the status of investigations to involved personnel, accurately advising if the subject(s) of the investigation poses any potential coverage issues, or if the issues are solely relevant to SIU
  • Compose investigation reports and advise claims staff and management of findings
  • Up to 70% travel required to conduct on-site investigations and attend court proceedings as required
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and ensure compliance with Privacy Regulations
  • Remain up-to-date with current with industry developments as they pertain to relevant legislation and investigative services
  • Oversee the training schedule through IASIU, NICB, SCFIA, CLM, or other organizations where DOI approved education takes place at least once per month
  • Provide DOI required training to claims department personnel serving as a Subject Matter Expert
  • Perform other investigative duties as assigned and with complete confidentiality


  • 5+ years related investigative experience
  • Effective and professional customer service skills, with an emphasis on professionally handling conflict or stressful situations
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent investigative and analytical skills, especially in regards to comprehensive interview techniques
  • Highly proficient time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work in a fast paced, changing environment
  • Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy
  • Advanced negotiation skills
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • College /University Degree preferred, though extensive experience can substitute
  • One of the following industry certifications preferred: CFE, CFI, CIFI, CPCU, etc.
  • Position requires the ability to lift up to 10 lbs on a daily basis
  • Position requires medium to high mobility throughout area of operation to meet investigative requirements
  • Position requires the ability to drive a car during the work day and may require frequent extended periods of sitting behind the wheel 
  • Ability to manage a flexible schedule with minimal oversight or administrative support while maintaining high standards of productivity. May require work on Saturday (with following Monday or flexible day off during the week), and managing case load effectively within or as closely as possible to a standard 37.5 hour work week.
  • Home based, remote position requiring 60-70% of time traveling and performing field work in area of operation
