The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $85,000 - $100,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

The Group Underwriting Consultant is responsible for helping drive Wawanesa’s group underwriting strategy and technical capabilities expansion. They partner closely with the Sales team and Group Leadership and are responsible for analyzing the and determining the acceptability of complex and high premium business according to company guidelines. They will also support the leadership in coaching and supporting a team of Underwriters focused on growing our block of business.  

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Client Relationship management in partnering and supporting clients and sales partners.  Bringing solutions to the table that provide win/win solutions for all parties. 
  • Working closely with leadership to develop and deliver on pre- and post-renewal strategies, supporting the financial requirement of all parties. 
  • Perform risk analysis using group underwriting principles and tools as well as external data sources for the purposes of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk.
  • Review complex group insurance requests for quotations and underwriting requirements to evaluate the degree of risk involved through assessment of claim history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision, for all Group Insurance lines of business.
  • Assist with the preparation of marketing specifications, review and prepare cost comparisons of carrier proposals.
  • Communicate decisions and respond to clients, brokers, agents, and third-party distributors requests in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Provide excellent customer service and build positive relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Maintain a full understanding of the group insurance markets, funding alternatives, networks and benefit plan options.
  • Contribute through knowledge sharing to the long-term plans as it relates to all Group Insurance products and services.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business Admin, Data Science, or related fields.
  • Completed  Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) Designation.
  • 10+ years of increasingly responsible/complex work with a focus on Underwriting practices in the Group Insurance industry. 
  • Strong working knowledge of group insurance products, services and distribution models.
  • Expert understanding of various underwriting and pricing methodologies including association business, block pricing and flexible benefit plans.
  • Significant experience with all common funding arrangements, such as fully insured, ASO, and retention/refund accounting.
  • Prior experience with the Global IQX Underwriting Platform an asset.
  • Self-motivated, highly driven, team player, with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize time-sensitive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Desire and demonstrated continuous learning within the group insurance industry.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review information carefully and comprehensively.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, develop and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information in a convincing manner.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to handle changing priorities and fluctuating work volumes to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and conflict resolution skills.  Leverage your negotiation skills. 
  • Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to provide justification.
  • Ability to multi-task and monitor progress to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to change and perform effectively under pressure.
