Work Environment: We offer a hybrid work environment that offers flexibility to our employees in balancing in-office (2 days per week OR 15 hours per week in a Wawanesa office) and remote work. You may work from any of the following locations: Winnipeg, MB; Vancouver, BC; Calgary, AB; Edmonton, AB; Lethbridge, AB.

 

Working Business Language: English. This role is considered a head-office role and will be required to communicate with internal and external stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language for this role is English.  As such, the successful candidate must be fully proficient in English.

The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $120,000 - $140,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

The Strategic Broker Relationship Manager is responsible for working closely with the business development teams and Vice President to manage the strategic broker partners in their respective territories.  These broker partners contribute over 40% of the territory premium and directly contribute to the success of the LOB financial plan.  This role is responsible for defining distribution strategies and tactics that drive new business acquisition and premium retention in personal and commercial business while ensuring portfolio quality, profitability and competitiveness for the defined territory. 

 

Reporting to the Vice President, Business Development, this creative, solution oriented, business development manager builds strong internal and external relationships, identifies opportunities, while ensuring portfolio quality, and profitability within the LOB appetite and guidelines. This role will hold senior business development accountability and be responsible for handling our largest strategic relationships to support the achievement of our targeted business goals. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary contact for the strategic brokers, building strong trust-based relationships to achieve growth, profitability, rate and retention objectives.
  • Achieve sales, growth and retention targets through proactive and disciplined, referral, renewal and new business pipeline management.
  • Lead the strategic broker planning sessions (at a national level) and be accountable for ensuring actions are initiated and generate intended results.
  • Collaborate with Business Development Representatives that support strategic partners in their respective territories.
  • Lead on establishing cadence of broker touchpoints which include delivering financial results and strategic initiatives.
  • Key Lead for RFP’s, pitch presentations, ambassador at key broker events.
  • Review and make recommendations around positioning on competitor/broker wordings and appetite. 
  • Share learning from declined or lost business to strengthen competitive positioning.
  • Collaborate with LOB leaders, claims, marketing, finance to identify risks, opportunities and paths to growth and profitability.
  • Embed Wawanesa’s purpose and values into all aspects of distribution, building trust with members, enabling success for brokers, and creating value for communities.
  • Promote inclusion, integrity, and fairness in how business is conducted, decisions are made, and teams are developed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial or personal insurance, with deep expertise in distribution.
  • Experience managing large, complex broker relationships.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, risk management, or related field; or CRM designations are considered strong assets.
  • Completed or actively pursuing a professional designation (CIP, FCIP, CRM, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of broker distribution models and business acumen.
  • Expert presentation and training skills with the ability to effectively facilitate, influence and deliver impactful presentations.
  • Proven ability to balance growth and risk, with a focus on long-term portfolio health and member value
  • Excellent relationship management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn internal systems quickly.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment to evaluate risk and profitability. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
