Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $160,000- $210,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

This role will build out an evolving Claims Analytics team. While bringing advanced analytical capability to claims processes and reporting, this role leads root cause analysis and investigation into emerging trends, and provides diagnostics and statistical analysis of trends, data-driven insights, and recommendations for action. This leadership role contributes to advancing the effectiveness of our insurance operations by recommending strategies and initiatives to improve Claims’ outcomes and contributes to managing claims’ loss costs following best practices in the P&C Insurance Industry.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Builds and develops a team of Claims Advanced Analytics experts and establishes data as the basis for claims insights by supporting and developing technical excellence, analytical capability and driving engagement with Wawanesa’s values and vision.
  • Collaborates with the Data & Analytics Office to evolve the data foundation for Claims - gaining stronger insights by bringing all claims data points together, meaningfully organizing claims data and making claims data more accessible and interpretable so we better understand our members and enable our aspirations.
  • Conducts thorough statistical analysis of claims data to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement. 
  • Develops and maintains claims reports and dashboards to monitor claims performance and reserve adequacy. 
  • Serves as a liaison between Enterprise Actuarial Services teams and Claims departments, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Stays informed on issues affecting both Claims and Enterprise Actuarial Services teams, analyzing their potential impacts on all functions.
  • Leads quantification of the impacts of regulatory reforms, changes in claims operations and other relevant factors. 
  • Leads a team of Claims Operational Insights specialists, who are responsible for the creation, design, and delivery of Claims business intelligence and management information framework for Claims Operations 
  • Leverages data and metrics to support our ability to deliver industry best outcomes, superior customer service, and consistency in reserving practices and claims settlements.
  • Works closely with regional and executive stakeholders at all levels of the organization to provide timely information, insights, and proposals to enable better decision making. 
  • Stays abreast of industry, regulatory and company changes or trends as they relate to the P&C insurance industry in general and actuarial insights in particular.
  • Oversees and coaches a team to ensure the work environment is respectful, challenging and rewarding and employees are maximized to their full potential while contributing to the achievement of Wawanesa's goals.
  • Develops and enhances productive business relationships by consulting with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience in an advanced analytics leadership role with a claims focus is ideal for this candidate.
  • Recommended 10 years’ property and casualty analytics experience, with three years in a leadership role.
  • ACAS designation recommended, and Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of actuarial processes and reserving techniques (reserving experience preferred)
  • Undergraduate university degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or other related field of study.
  • Experience of delivering insight and recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship management skills – ability to manage key relationships and act independently.
  • Excellent communication style – ability to interact with Executives, Senior Management and other key stakeholders with the competence to effectively convey ideas in a persuasive and eloquent manner.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience to create a high-performing employee culture.
  • A passion and drive to want to get things right for the customer.
  • Ability to make well justified decisions in complex and high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive plans and solutions that bridge complex issues spanning across time.
  • Strong business acumen with critical thinking and problem-solving skills leading to the ability to recognize and identify critical issues.
  • CIP or equivalent Property and Casualty industry designation considered an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
