The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. Job Overview
The Senior Underwriter / Field Underwriter, Commercial Mid-Market is responsible for building a profitable portfolio in Northern Alberta through strong underwriting, trusted broker partnerships, and proactive business development.
Working with a high degree of autonomy and within defined underwriting authority, this role assesses, prices, negotiates, and structures complex commercial risks while identifying opportunities to grow new and existing broker relationships. It is well suited to an experienced Senior Underwriter who is ready to broaden their market presence and develop into a field underwriting role.
The successful candidate will receive support and coaching to strengthen territory management, broker engagement, and business development capabilities while continuing to apply sound underwriting judgment and deliver sustainable, profitable growth.
Job Responsibilities
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with assigned brokers, serving as a responsive underwriting partner and providing clear, practical guidance.
- Develop a strong understanding of the Northern Alberta market and work with broker partners to identify new business opportunities that align with appetite and portfolio strategy.
- Underwrite, price, negotiate, and structure complex commercial mid-market risks within established authority.
- Manage a strong pipeline of new business opportunities, focusing on profitable production growth, quality submissions, and sustainable portfolio results.
- Partner with brokers early in the submission process to assess fit, shape opportunities, and develop competitive solutions.
- Apply sound judgment when balancing customer needs, market conditions, coverage, pricing, and profitability.
- Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, rationale, risk controls, and broker commitments.
- Use market, competitor, and portfolio insights to strengthen broker strategies and improve business outcomes.
- Collaborate with underwriting, business development, loss control, claims, and other internal partners to deliver a consistent broker and member experience.
- Contribute technical expertise, share knowledge, and support the development of less experienced team members.
- Participate in purposeful broker meetings, industry events, and market activities that support relationship development and growth objectives.
- Develop field underwriting capabilities through coaching, joint broker meetings, territory planning, and progressively increased ownership of broker relationships.
- Travel within the assigned territory on a planned basis when in-person engagement will strengthen broker relationships or advance business opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of commercial Property and Casualty underwriting experience, preferably with mid-market accounts.
- Strong commercial underwriting knowledge with the ability to assess, price, negotiate, and structure complex or multi-line risks.
- Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with brokers, customers, and internal partners.
- Interest in business development and a desire to grow into broader field underwriting and territory management responsibilities.
- Sound judgment and a disciplined approach to balancing growth, risk appetite, service, and profitability.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the confidence to discuss underwriting decisions and business opportunities.
- A collaborative, curious, and proactive approach to identifying solutions and creating value for broker partners.
- Related business experience, including experience supporting or implementing business change.
- Completed or actively pursuing a professional insurance designation such as CIP, FCIP, CRM, or equivalent.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities, maintain a quality pipeline, and meet commitments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn internal systems quickly.
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to participate in planned broker visits and market activities throughout Northern Alberta, as business needs require.
