Job Overview

Working under minimal supervision, the Claims Technical Specialist – Operations contributes to Wawanesa’s goal of delivering an exceptional and consistent claims service experience by analyzing business processes to support design and/or modification of operational policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the adjusting function.


Job Responsibilities

  • Perform ongoing support and subject matter expertise on claims file handling, strategy, action planning and resolution.
  • Establishing timely and accurate loss and expense reserves through the life of the claims you provide oversight on.
  • Lead and manage regional large loss process per executive office guidelines, including reporting, actions/update and escalation. 
  • Liaise with Executive office in support of file handling in excess of regional claims handling authority.
  • Recommend changes to documentation (business processes, user guides, and procedures) in order to facilitate user training as well as the integration of new processes within current operations. 
  • Liaise with the Executive Office, assisting with the development of rules, guidelines, manuals and forms.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures and Standard of Work documentation.
  • Coordinate and assist with development of regional communication plans related to operational processes, projects, and performance. 
  • Review and analyze regional claims results from QA as provided by Exec office and support action planning and performance improvement. Interpret policy wordings, determine policy coverage and provide coaching to staff.
  • Coordinate and provide instruction and/or training of regulatory requirements for compliance. Ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted on all oversight files to determine coverages and liability, while adhering to Wawanesa’s adjusting guidelines, and recognizing when to refer claims to appropriate teams. 
  • Demonstrating proficient to highly proficient skills to review repair estimates, create narrative scopes and generate intermediate to senior level estimates using an estimating software system.
  • Provide ongoing technical advice, guidance, peer coaching and mentoring to claims staff.  Mentor and develop team members through the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
  • Maintaining an effective and current diary system and document claim file activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage conflicting priorities in an effective manner.
  • Working in partnership with other claims staff in both an individual and team-oriented capacity.
  • Supplement the National Catastrophe Team as required for Corporate Catastrophe Response in any region.
  • Developing, demonstrating, and maintaining knowledge and understanding of policy coverages, while complying with regional regulatory and licensing requirements (as applicable). Remaining current with legislative changes and trends in the insurance industry.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Minimum of seven years Property and Casualty industry experience 
  • Completed CIP or equivalent Property and Casualty industry designation 
  • College/University degree preferred 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Superior knowledge of coverage wordings, policy interpretation, case law, legislation, and insurance regulations 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of information, and to select and implement best solutions in a timely manner 
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience and present information or arguments in a convincing manner 
  • Good negotiation skills, with the ability to present information in a convincing manner
  • Excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to ensure group objectives are met
